UFC 226: Miocic vs Cormier fight
T-Mobile Arena – Las Vegas, NV
Sat, Jul 7, 6: 30p ET
The main event features Stipe Miocic defending the heavyweight championship for the fourth time against current light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier.
The co-main event features featherweight champion Max Holloway defending his belt against No. 1 ranked Brian Ortega.
Miocic (18-2) made his record-setting third consecutive title defense when he dominated and battered Francis Ngannou to win by unanimous decision at UFC 226. When asked about the possibility of facing Cormier, the part-time firefighter dismissed the notion. He was focused on the pending birth of his first child, wanting to relax and be away from the sport. A win over someone the caliber of Cormier will cement Miocic as the greatest heavyweight of all time.
After blasting Volkan Oezdemir by second-round TKO at the aforementioned UFC 220, Cormier (20-1, 1 NC) was noncommittal on moving back up to heavyweight and facing possibly the best fighter the division has ever seen. He wanted to spend time with his family and due to the pending return of former heavyweight titleholder and good friend and main training partner Cain Velasquez, Cormier didn’t want to step on his toes. Cormier looks to become only the second fighter in UFC history to hold two titles at the same time. If he does pull off the monumental feat, it would be hard to deny Cormier the title of greatest fighter of all time.
But, things drastically changed as less than ten days after UFC 220, Miocic and Cormier agreed to meet in what usually is the biggest fight week of the year and be coaches on the current season of “The Ultimate Fighter.”
UFC 226 is the most top heavy card of 2018: a headline fight with history-making implications on the line, a co-main event highlighted by a dominant champion and an undefeated challenger and a heavyweight fight between the two hardest punchers in the division.
(All times Eastern.)
